How to Update an Auto Insurance Policy

1.

Call your auto insurance company. Let it know that you need to update your policy.

2.

Advise the agent of the change in your auto policy that you need to make. She needs all of the information on your new car such as make, model and vehicle identification number (VIN).

3.

Cancel the insurance on the car you traded in. Do this at the same time by supplying the information on that car so your company can remove the car from your policy.

4.

Update your auto insurance policy when there are any changes to your policy such as is a new driver on the policy, a name change due to marriage, removal of a driver or moving violations.

5.

Inform your agent of these or any changes as soon as they occur. The law gives you so many days to comply, so call in the changes on the day they occur so you don't forget.

6.

Review your auto insurance policy annually. Update coverage on your car by raising or lowering your deductible. Consider dropping comprehensive coverage for older model cars.

7.

Make sensible changes to your policy after discussing your options with your auto insurance agent. Update your policy promptly if necessary.
